"Alagoas mitu"

According to this sign, the zoo holds some of the hybrid stock of mitu used for reintroduction of the Alagoas currasow. The main breeding centre of the Crax Foundation is in Contagem, a fewkm away. So it does not seem unlikely that they are hybrids of Alagoas mitu.

      Wow! This must have been special!
      Where else is this species kept?
    • Therabu
      Nowhere else in public institutions as far as I know
    • amur leopard
      Wow, so they can only be seen by the public in Belo Horizonte...
    • devilfish
      Similar animals are also on display in Parque das Aves (Foz do Iguaçu's wonderful bird park).
    • Therabu
      @devilfish Interesting testimony since Parque das aves is far more visited than BH Zoologico and I've never heard about them there. I saw that you visited devilfish, would you have some pictures or signs about it ? I would be very interested to learn more about involvement of brazilian zoos with these spécies and breeding programs overall !

      Beautiful picture Therabu ! I should mention that there is actually another place where these can be seen by the public called "Instituto Pauxi mutum" which is in a town called Borá in Sao Paulo State. This institute isn't a zoo but a captive breeding centre and has had a fair bit of success with breeding the species ex-situ so far. It is also usually open to public visits by prior arrangement.
      FelipeDBKO and Therabu like this.

      @Therabu

      I think they went on display at the end of 2017. When I visited in 2016 they were still off-display so I wouldn't want to publicly post pictures without permission, but can share them in private correspondence on here, by email or on social media if you'd like.
