Dholes

I got to see dholes for the first time

Dholes

The dholes are living in what once contained polar bears.

I think I appreciate the dhole exhibit taking over the very outdated polar bear exhibit which was recently renovated in the 1960s.

@Matthew Guimac I agree. Too much ground and not enough water for a polar bear, but just enough for dholes.

By the way, the Bronx Zoo's last polar bear, Tundra, was experiencing health issues from old age and was seen doing abnormal behavior and resting longer than what polar bears do in the wild and in good captive environments in good zoos.

@birdsandbats Not really sure what I'm supposed to say to any of this tbh :p @Matthew Guimac does seem to have some sort of gripe with the Bronx, having repeatedly made comments calling enclosures worse than they really are (my favorite being when he claimed the elephant yard had no natural substrate when dirt, grass, and a large pool are all that can be seen in the photo :D). I'm not sure what his source is that Tundra was exhibiting "abnormal behavior" and "resting longer than what polar bears do in the wild and in good captive environments", or even what said abnormal behavior was. I think every Polar Bear I've seen in US zoos have been resting, at least part of the time. The only exceptions off the top of my head are Gus at Central Park (who I only have one memory of, when he was swimming), one of Cincinnati's bears (also swimming, but they both rested a good deal over my two-day visit), and ironically Tundra, who was always swimming and playing with his big red ball the last three or four times I saw him. He did rest a good deal, but no more so than other bears I've seen.

I'm not really sure what he means by "in good zoos", as it does imply that he believes Bronx is a bad zoo as @Ebirah766 has pointed out. I'd be interested to hear him explain that statement either way :p

@ThylacineAlive By the way, when I revisited the Bronx Zoo, after revisiting the Tiger Mountain exhibit, I saw only one of the three dhole brothers that were placed on exhibit and the exhibit seems to be a perfect way to convert an outdated polar bear exhibit that was part of the Big Bears lineup from the 1960s.

@Matthew Guimac Unless I'm mistaken, the zoo has exhibited bears in this portion of the zoo since its opening.
