Leopard Trail - Red Giant Flying Squirrel

@Zooish Thank you, it is so sad that the giant flying squirrel exhibit at Night Safari is one of the most stunning exhibit among the zoo world.

Ok, to add to the confusion, I believe the individual in the photo is being identified as the Indian Giant Flying Squirrel (P.philippensis). The individual that I saw and thought was the P.philippensis was actually P.elegans (they look rather similarly and are about the same size). So it seems the original group of P.philippensis which came from San Diego Zoo (?) which were identified as P.philippensis lylei (the Vietnamese race) are no longer on display/have died out.

According to a keeper only 1 Red-and-white Flying squirrel is remaining, a female.

@lintworm that's very unfortunate. Did the keeper mention if the other species are kept off show?

@Zooish When the last squirrel dies is there a reason why they would not get more? Are giant flying squirrels no longer in captivity anywhere and thus impossible to legally attain?
    • TeaLovingDave
@DavidBrown Red-and-White Giant Flying Squirrel are certainly around in both private and public collections within Europe, so I would be amazed if there are none around elsewhere.......
    • Zooish
@DavidBrown @TeaLovingDave indeed there are a few P.alborufus in private collections and zoos in Europe. The P.alborufus in Singapore have been from China, where they are also present in a few zoos (wild caught and confiscated animals). But giant flying squirrels in general are not being kept in large enough numbers to sustain a captive population without supplementing with wild caught specimens.
