      Nice critter! It's an ant in the genus Myrmecia, commonly called "bulldong ants". Unfortunately the specific ID is impossible by photos, as usual in insects.

      Thanks. I know the common black coloured bulldog ants, but thought this might have been the Queensland fire ant because of it's colour.

      @Kakapo Nope, it is possible to ID most species at least to subgenus level.

      This one is a Giant Red Bullant (Myrmecia gulosa), note the large size, red colouration and partially black tip on the abdomen.
