I know that it has been praised countless times here on ZooChat, but THIS IS A ZOO EXHIBIT. No fences anywhere, no hotwire to be seen except around the top of the rocks, and the hidden moats are...who knows? We can all guess, but landscape immersion at its best resulted in an award-winning habitat in 1994. Now 15 years old, this is still an amazing section of animals in startling realistic enclosures: grizzly bears, river otters, rocky mountain goats, Roosevelt elk, bald eagles, arctic foxes, arctic wolves, snowy owls and porcupines.

Fantastic photo snowleopard; Seattle seems like a great zoo. Does it have any weakness?
    • snowleopard
@Cat-Man It has a weakness of a lack of significant progress during the past decade. The elephants are gone, the Reptile House has closed down, the Nocturnal House has closed down, hippos are on their way out, etc. Since the addition of the excellent penguin habitat, there hasn't been anything really notable in the past 10 years. Without a doubt, other major American zoos have spent millions of dollars on new exhibits while Woodland Park has regressed.

@snowleopard I see. Why do you think that is?

I guess one positive you can take is that none of the mentioned weakness’ are due to quality of animal habitats.

@Cat-Man The zoo has had a new director who has focused on conservation issues, and there hasn't been a major Capital Campaign for many years now. Perhaps after the pandemic subsides then we'll see some movement towards new exhibits at the zoo.
