Unidentified large mammal (1992)

Appears to be a Brazilian Tapir.

It's a tapir - Lowland Tapir (Tapirus terrestris) to be specific.

@Great Argus @Coelacanth18 That's what I thought it might have been, but the nose looked too short to me. Lincoln Park Zoo did have tapirs throughout the '90s which would make sense. They must not have updated the exhibit signage. Thanks for your help!

@PAKMan No problem. The shorter snout is common for that species - if you look through online images of Lowland/Brazilian, you'll see a lot with trunks similar in length to this one.

The snout is probably still quite long, but it's prehensile, so it's just facing forwards towards the camera. It's a bit on the chubby side though!

@mrcriss That's what also made me wonder if it was a tapir or not! Looked too heavy to me. I'm assuming it was probably a recent arrival to the zoo (given the outdated signage) but I wish I knew the history of it!

@mrcriss @PAKMan Looks like it might a little chubby, the average weight for Brazilian Tapirs is 500 lbs though. They're not lightly built animals.

@mrcriss I knew that the snouts are prehensile and wondered if it was just be tucked in, but I also noticed that many photos of Lowland Tapir show the snouts being that length compared to Baird's. I suppose it could be either; fortunately, the coat color is an identifier for Lowland as well.

I work with 3 lowland tapir, so I am aware
