Which part of Alaska was this taken? I am trying to determine the exact subspecies.

@Pleistohorse ah thank you. Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus super cool! How many caribou subspecies have you seen and photographed so far?

@UngulateNerd92 I believe that all Caribou in Alaska are considered to be Barren Ground Caribou, with the exception of some Feral Reindeer on the Seward Peninsula, Kodiak Island, and maybe Adak Island.

I’ve seen Caribou in the Alaska Range (Denali National Park and Broad Pass south of Cantwell), the Kenai Peninsula, and on the Arctic Plain north of the Brooks Range. I’ve also seen them in the Rocky Mountains near Muncho Lake in northern British Columbia. Those animals may have been Woodland Caribou? The ones on the Kenai and in the Broad Pass area live in mixed forest/meadow environments. The ones I’ve seen in Denali Park roam (in summer at least) the Alpine tundra areas of the park. The ones on the north coast of Alaska inhabit traditional, barren ground treeless (not technically but to our eyes yes) open Arctic tundra environments.
