In my opinion, they should have kept this paddock and made it a mixed species exhibit for different species of ungulate and ground birds.

Hogle Zoo has demolished most of its old hoofstock paddocks except those up on the ridge above Asian Highlands where the markhor are.

Hogle Zoo used to have a commendable hoofstock collection:

Before construction began on Rocky Shores in 2010, the west end of the zoo had a great African ungulate collection including addax, springbok, Cuvier's gazelle, Grevy's zebra. The 2014 African Savanna planned to include more antelope species, however, the lowland nyala brought to the zoo did not last long unfortunately.

Previous Caprinae species included Chinese goral, desert bighorn sheep, and the rarely seen in zoos Stone sheep.

The zoo also had some interesting domestic species like llama, Bactrian camel, burro, Angora goat, and Navajo sheep.

Hogle's current hoofstock collection only has Giraffe, Hartmann's mountain zebra, and Turkmenian markhor. Desert bighorn sheep and burro are planned to be brought back for the new Wild Utah exhibit opening in 2024.

I feel like hoofstock are slowly losing popularity in zoos across the county. The history of this animal group being decreased at Hogle is a common occurrence in zoos in America, especially as the AZA phases out many species in their TAGs.
