This is Franka (f) she moved to Artis Zoo Amsterdam in 2008 before leaving for Chester Zoo in October 09.

I wonder if there are any other Bears in europe with as complete 'spectacles' as Franka does. Does she have relatives perhaps?

Apparently Franka has successfully bred before in one of her previous zoo's although I don't know where any of her offspring are now. Her history is somewhat sketchy. She came to Dortmund several years ago as a mate for an existing bear who later turned out to be a female  hence Franka went to Artis Zoo at the end of 2007 and then came to Chester in October 2009.

I'm trying to obtain a copy of the studbook to fill in the blanks and trace those offspring. Will let you know if I'm successful

When I was in Dortmund this animal was the only spectacled bear there. It was believed to be a male but I have to admit it was only the size of a female! It was born at Dortmund!

Franka was born at Dortmund Zoo in March 1997. She was wrongly sexed as a male in the beginning. She has never had offspring, not in Dortmund and not at Amsterdam (where she was held alone !). She has a number of siblings, including a sister from the same litter, which is with her (now castrated) father at Pont Scorff in France. None of her siblings have had similar markings. Her mother (Inca) is now at Antwerp.

Thanks for clearing that up, Saro
Hopefully she will have Chester's first litter next year :)
