I'm only going by what my brother in law (who lives in Frankfurt) told me. I got the impression from him he thought new enclosures for the bears were in the pipeline - not that the bears were being transferred elsewhere. Frustratingly (because I like to read as much as possible about zoos I've been to) - though entirely understandable of course - the zoo website only has very minimal info in English so it's quite possible there's more info on there about future plans that I can't read as my German is very limited.
The next big project in Frankfurt Zoo is to build a new set of bear exhibits where the current bear grottos are, so yes, the bears will remain at Frankfurt. A new entrance is also part of the project. As far as I know it is scheduled to begin very soon
If I understood the recent news article right, Frankfurt will bring in Andean bears when the new bear enclosure is built. The 1,1 Sloth bears goes/went to Singapur and they also intensively search for a new zoo that would take the remaing 0,1 Malaian bear.
Really? That sounds like a first and a very interesting mix as well. It will probably take a very specialized exhibit design to have those two species co-exist peacefully. Why not just do the new "classic" with spectacled bears and coatis?
