ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! It's dumps like this that give all zoos a bad name!

I 100% agree. This is why I always maintain the belief that it is better to shut down the garbage zoos of the world rather than let them exist and further erode the idea of a zoo in the minds of many. I wonder if there is a regulatory group that can do something about this atrociously small exhibit, but I couldn't find anything online that was specific to Italian zoos.

It's a dump of an elephant exhibit, but looking at the website and elsewhere on the forum there are some decent exhibits at this site.

It covers 75 hectares, which is getting on for 200 acres. Certainly there is potential here. Whether there is the capital to develop that is another matter.

If this zoo continues to keep elephants in THIS hell whole, it`s a garbage zoo. This alone speaks volumes of the mindset of the management. It`s unbelieveable that the Italian authorities are not shutting this down. Italy belongs to the European Union after all.

At the moment the zoo is building a new elephant exibit!

Is this an actual example of us here at zoochat having some sort of effect by posting pictures? When I was there a year ago, they had lots of material highlighting their next development for penguins, which would take in the old polar bear enclosure......nothing about a new elephant enclosure, and yet they appear to have put that on hold and promoted a new elephatn development instead (and rightly so.......)

Where´s the zoo got the funds for a new and hopefully a decent elephant exhibit? With the current difficult economical situation not only in Italy and the debt-plagued cities / regions... Who owns the zoo btw?

I think one zoo cannot be valued on one exhibit only. Pistoia Zoo has made tremendous achievements in the last 10 years, without any external help. This is not easy task, especially in the present economic situation. They followed their masterplan we may discuss but they are actually working on elephants - after realising the penguin exhibit. I think critics are always welcomed but personally I believe that animal welfare is only one of the issue to be valued in zoo assessment.
