Artis - Lemurenland

The brand new Lemurenland walkthrough island in Artis Amsterdam. This island houses red ruffed lemurs in a very spacious environment with several live and mature trees for climbing in. A fantastic exhibit! I visited Artis the week that this new island opened in July 2008. I was such a joy to walk among them and seeing the climbing about in the trees after having seen them in their old and crammed exhibit in the Small Mammals House. July 2008

How do they stop the lemurs getting off the island?

I am actually not sure how the technique works, but the lemurs will not touch the bridges leading to the island. I have seen the same type of bridge in other zoos though. Can anybody here explain?

      Electrical charge no doubt

When the primate is first released onto the island and the zoo is closed. There is a electric current runing through the metal bridge. The trusting little guys go about exploring there new home.

The keepers place some yummy food piecies on the bridge. The dominant animal of the group usually goes over full of trust and love!! To get this food.
"WHAM" they recieve a electric shock! Scared shitless it well may have been there first electric shock ever!! So they run around telling all there family. DONT touch that dam bridge.

What is really interesting is that this piece of information can be passed onto new animals introduced to the enclosure. Without the need to electrocute them.

If a animal shows that they have forgotten about the bridge they will be reminded!!

I belive Apenhaul perfected this type of barrier. Probaly the best available!
