Astrobird, thanks for sharing the pictures of this interesting Japanese macaque exhibit.

Do you know what the story is of how this display came to be? Did someone just decide that this park needed a monkey exhibit in it or is it the remnants of an old zoo or something?

quoted in part from one of the signs on the enclosure "City Park has a long history of exhibiting animals. This has included thylacines, wallabies, a brown bare, deer and a troop of Rhesus monkeys. The monkeys, kept here from the late 1800s to the late 1970s were a popular attraction to generations of locals and visitors alike.
When the last member of the Rhesus monkeys died in 1979, the Launceston City Council decided to continue the tradition of exhibiting animals. The old enclosure was upgraded and Investigations were undertaken to select a species best suited our climate.
In 1980, a troop of 10 Japanese macaque monkeys arrived in Launceston from the Japanese Monkey Centre.
During 2002 the enclosure underwent extensive redevelopment. This was required for health and safety reasons as Japanese Macaques carry the Herpes B virus which can be transferred to humans.
The redevelopment provided the opportunity to upgrade the facilities for housing and exhibiting the troop."
I counted about 18 or 19 monkeys including some very young babies

That certainly answers my question. Thanks!

This park is one of the few places in the world that ever exhibited thylacines then.
