We need this type of elephant herds in North America.

How is the exhibit like? is it suitable for the big herd?

In some respects these herds are easier to look after than just a couple of animals. They entertain each other , and the keeper interactions so necessary to avoid boredom with two animals can actually be counter-productive with a herd.Rebellious , psychotic behaviour is kept at a minimum in an integrated herd, and husbandry operations are more fluid. The downside is obviously that if you have the average-sized zoo , you end up with precious little land to be shared out among the rest of your stock.I am a big fan of elephants , but I think that in the real world , small zoos with a no-elephant policy may be making a good decision.

This has got to be one of the loveliest pictures I have ever seen on ZooChat!

      PS
Actually, this very picture enticed me to look through the whole of the Emmen gallery - and what a brilliant zoo it appears to be!

      Check it out!

Wow that's loads of eles! Isn't Emmen rebuilding the entire zoo or did I make that up?
    • Dan
Well... there are two "Emmens" in the gallery. Emmen "new" and, presumably, Emmen "old"...

      Perhaps someone can explain?

The whole Emmen Zoo will be relocated a bit outside the city of Emmen. Some of it is already finished which is what you can see in the "Emmen - New" gallery. Check this thread for more information about the new zoo.

Thanks for the explanation. I checked out the thread, the zoo´s web site and the map here at ZooChat. What a wonderful and incredible project! In a city with only 100 000 inhabitants... fantastic! And still - I really liked most of what I saw in the old zoo.

But the coming new elephant exhibit promises to be something spectacular! And how about that "baboon canyon"? Great stuff, indeed!
