This is just one small part of the huge Riviera Hall at Rotterdam Zoo. This room has lots of tropical plants as well as some smaller bird species flying around. There were a few people sitting on the tables around the central pond to escape the bitter cold outside (I even saw one couple playing uno here). There is also a large central hall with reptiles and fish, two big tropical walk-through areas for birds and some small mammals, and one wing that has the indoor exhibits for pygmy hippos and gorillas. It is quite an epic structure.

would I be right in assuming the central pool is for Victoria amazonica?

(Actually I just clicked on the photo to get the original size and I think that that is exactly what the sign to the right says!)

I think so because I've seen other photos where the pond has giant water lilies in it but on my visit it was empty. It would be even more impressive than it already is with a pond full of giant water lilies.
