Melbourne's Orang-utan Sanctuary..

orangutan enclosure #3. this outdoor enclosure is the largest and features a "forest" of green sway poles. it is interesting to see how the apes prefer to use them instead of travelling on the ground. just like they would in the wild, they instead brachiate to anywhere they like, allowing the ground to be heavily planted with grasses and shrubs.

      If the orangutans actually brachiate with the use of those sway poles then I'd declare the sticks a success...but if they aren't used by the apes then they appear to be a poor representation of an Indonesian rainforest.

      I've seen them in use and they are a wonderful success. The orang-utans have learnt to sway harder if they can't reach the next pole and will keep rocking harder and harder until they can reach it.
