      The 1st name is also used quite frequently. And 1 name per species is possible only in ideal world :p

      Interestingly, I have almost always seen them called Horsfield's Tortoise, and Russian Tortoise just a couple of times. Wikipedia doesn't mention the "accepted (by whom?) common name" you give at all, but does also list Central Asian Tortoise as a third option. This case does illustrate the issues of using common names, and the extreme usefulness of scientific names. :)

      same here. I googled "Asian steppe tortoise" and got some hits for "Central Asian steppe tortoise" but not very many.

      I have to agree horsefields or Russian tortoise are the only two common names I have heard for this species
