Elephant House

July 2008. The original elephant house and still used for the same purpose. The zoo's next development is building a new elephant house behind the Asian Domain hoofstock yards, and changing those yards into elephant enclosures. This area will still be used for keeper demonstrations and training.

This yard looks very small and barren

It is small and barren...that is why they walk the elephants around the zoo and to other enclosures to forage in.

Thats good. How old are the two elephants??
    • okapikpr
Panya is 44 and Jean is 36

I hope they won't demolish the old elephant house if it is from when the zoo began. You said they would still use the area for training and such but I was not sure if that meant the building as well. New Orleans has (or had, prior to Hurricane Katrina) so many lovely old buildings that must be preserved.

The old elephant barn and exhibit is now being converted to house Sumatran orangutans. The new exhibit should be open by June 2015.
