Yes. There is also a bridge that crosses Habitat 3, which is a really neat visitor experiance when viewing elephants. In addition to a number of ground level viewing areas, the bridge gives a cool perspective.

Is there still a possibility for the elephants' space to be eventually expanded into the valley below Asia Trail where the bongo used to be? Or is that area still being saved for possible Indian Rhinos, Malayan Tapir, and other Asian hoofstock?

I think the National Zoo just wants to finish the elephant exhibit and the master plan before they even begin to think of expanding the elephant exhibit. There is enough room for 10 elephants, according to their website.

Phase 1 will open Labor Day nad that includes:Barn (an addition to the Elephant House), Habitat 2 (the area behind the current Elephant House), Habitat 3 (the area that will reach down to the top of Beaver Valley), the Homer and Martha Gudelsky Elephant Outpost (which will be located at the top of Beaver Valley), and the Elephant Trek (a path that replaces the road to the Bird House).
Phase Two(2010-2012):Elephant Community Center (the renovated Elephant House), Habitat 1 (the area to the left of the Elephant House, when viewed from Olmsted Walk), and plaza (the front of the Elephant Community Center).
