Does anyone know what used to inhabit this area? It's near the gharials.

There have been several species in here over the years. The last use for it was as the North American river otter exhibit.

I had a fantastic day at Los Angeles Zoo on my recent California zoo trip, but here is what I wrote in part of my report:

      - No less than 12 closed exhibits, from several roundhouse cages to smaller terrariums. That is too much for a major zoo in the middle of summer, and I’m not even including the old sea lion pool that still sits desolate and empty near the Children’s Zoo.

Actually, the Indian Gharial was the old North American river otter exhibit. The last permanent animals that lived here were sea lions, and then it held small alligators during a Bayou event the zoo had years ago. It has remained empty since.

@mstickmanp Thanks for the correction. I've lost track of what was what in the old aquatics section since the LAIR was built on half of it and transformed its appearance.

In the 1960s, this exhibit originally held South African Fur Seals, then followed by Elephant Seals.
