I saw this sign and thought "Accredited?! Accredited by whom?"

      So I had a google.

The zoo is accredited by the United States Zoological Association (USZA), which is an organisation founded by the zoo itself in 2008. I looked up the USZA website and after a bit of a search around found a list of "USZA Approved Facilities" (USZA | Official Site) - although the heading is careful to note that "These facilities are recommended because we believe in them. They are not necessarily accredited or affiliated with the USZA in any way."

Thanks for that information. By the way, I've decided that I'm now a professional zoo expert because I just founded SLZA last night. That stands for "Snow Leopard Zoo Association" and any who would care to join can do so as long as they are crazy enough to go on road trips that are at least a few weeks in duration.

I think SLZA is more qualified to review and accredit facilities than the USZA.

but SLZA probably wouldn't approve the sort of facilities that the USZA approves....

us department of agriculture, animal and plant health inspection service, is mandated by law to enforce the national animal welfare act which apply to domestic and exotic breeding and exhibit facilities for only mammals and birds. The agency is very weak on enforcing requirements on exotic animal facilities nationwide. It offers a printed list by states of licensed exotic exhibitors for birds and mammals including circuses and miscellaneous exhibitors.

Yes that is my point exactly.
