Chlidonias

flying dragon (Draco spilonotus)

at Tangkoko, northern Sulawesi, July 2009. These are very difficult to get good photos of because they move so fast and are so flighty (so to speak). This is a male one (the same individual as in the other photo).

Chlidonias, what is your favored hypothesis for why there are more species of gliding animals in the forests of these islands than anywhere else in the world?

I just go with the usual one, where the type of forest (big tall trees, not a lot of anything inbetween) makes gliding more economical than brachiating or jumping. I've never been to Africa or South America so I have no direct comparisons to make for the forest types unfortunately.

Maybe it is just a random quirk of nature.
