Almost as close to a natural habitat as it possibly gets.

Indeed, it's what I liked most about the park.

Intrigued by this park; could you tell us a little about it, and how it comes to have such a nice group of Gaur?

Well, the park is located in a very important wetland zone in the state of Tabasco, home to crocodiles, gar and countless species of birds, as well as monkeys and other animals. The place was declared a protected area in 1987; the actual park/zoo was opened in the early 90s with the goal of attracting tourists to the place and raise funding for the protection of the wetlands.
The exotic animals, including the gaur, were actually brought with that aim, as the native jungle animals are very difficult to see during day;they basically live in an "island", with a lagoon keeping them separated from the protected wetlands. Most of them were donated by zoos around the country but the elephant seemingly came from Africa.
The jungle and savannah are preserved basically intact and if you're lucky you can get a glimpse of a crocodile or a manatee in the lagoons.
The name of the park comes from the yumka (or yumkab) which according to the Chontal people were supernatural beings that brought rain to Earth and protected the jungle and its creatures.
