At one point in the early 1980s they wanted to greatly expand the zoo's size and add animals like giraffes and lions, but that obviously never happened. With Sacramento just a few miles down the freeway with the larger species I guess there isn't much point in duplicating the exhibits.
We did use to have African Lions and Polar Bears at one point in time. Most of all the old, outdated enclosures for the larger animals we used to have, have been torn down to make way for the new Asian Trek expansion.
