Givskud Zoo - Safari (Africa #3)
Part of the third savannah exhibit on the Safari Route in Givskud Zoo. This exhibit houses southern white rhinos (Ceratotherium simum simum), cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer caffer), black sable antelopes (Hippotragus niger niger), gemsbok (Oryx gazella) and black wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou). Originally this exhibit was a drive-through but the wildebeest started teasing the rhinos and they had trouble distinguishing the wildebeest from the cars. The rhinos moved to this savannah exhibit in 2001 when a new stable was built for them. In 2005 a viewing hut was added so the rhinos could be seen by visitors on foot. The Safari Route opened in 1972 and was completely restructured in 1991. After the restructuring it consisted of six drive-through enclosures, one of which was later scrapped to make way for the gorillas and one is no longer drive-through. Currently it consists of one Pampas, one Prairie and two savannahs, one non-drive-through savannah and the lion enclosure. July 2012
