      Wow, this species is cool. Does it fill the otter niche in Australia?

      pretty much, yes. They are very cool critters, and much bigger than you might assume too. They feed on fish, aquatic invertebrates, etc. I watched them hunting starfish at St. Kilda in Melbourne last year. They left the remains on particular rocks, looking like piles of splayed orange peels.

      How big can they get?

      I'd say probably close to 30cm (I think that's a little bit more than a foot) and wikipedia agrees but they call it a rakali. That's a name, along with beaver rat, that I've never heard.

      I've never heard the name Rakali either. 30cm for the body and another 30cm or so for the tail.

      Since my last post 8 years ago the name Rakali has become more common-place, although the name Australian Water Rat is still widely used.
