      @Newzooboy: do you know if the large African mammals at the Johannesburg Zoo that are native to South Africa are brought in from wild-caught sources or do they have breeding programs for some of them?

      I would say a bit of both. Inter-zoo breeding programmes are really ltd to Jo'burg & Pretoria but some exchange does occur between the zoos and the parks/ reserves/ game farms.

      Certainly there was evidence of breeding among the various antelopes and other hoofstock but I didnt see any very young giraffe, hippo or rhino (in fact I saw only a single black rhino at each zoo) and I'm pretty sure all the elephants at both zoos were female.
