What is the outdoor yard like at National Zoo? About how many acres is the yard(s)? It looks like they have a few yards.
    • Zoogoer2000
i'd say its about an acre or so

It's one of IDA's campaign's and they are always complaining about the size, but in this photo it looks like they have a winding paddock that looks relatively large, but could use more green.

If you are familiar with the National Zoo, I believe this is the old Indian Rhino yard. And I think its bigger than any of the other elephant yards?

They're being pulled down and renovated soon aren't they?

      Yes they are...

The exhibit setup here is like this. There is one long paddock that can be seperated into three. There fairly dusty btu there better then other elephant houses i've seen. There are two fairly large pools and the area is about half an acre to one acre. The indoor exhibits is where it gets ugly, three indoor, concrette rooms which are pretty bad.The good news is, the zoo is remodeling and expanding the Elephant House and Outdoor Yards into Elephant Trails. It will have three larger exhibits and a half-mile long elephant exercise walking trail. All in all it wil lcover about three and a half acres. The indoor building wil l have the addition of a barn,a new indoor exhibit and an indoor Elephant Community Room so the elephants can stay together year-round

@Zoogoer2000: you are absolutely right about the new elephant exhibit, and it will be a huge improvement on the current one. As you pointed out the pachyderm house right now is awful, and the elephants only have two more years to go before the habitat is completed. The only disappointing aspect for zoo visitors will be that the river hippos and pygmy hippos will both be transported to other zoos and the National Zoo will no longer have any species of hippo in their collection.
