New Zealand little bittern (Ixobrychus novaezelandiae)

now considered extinct, this species is known from less than 15 specimens, all but one from the West Coast of the South Island (apart for a dubious record from the North Island) and all from the 1800s. There are also some subfossil skeletal remains known from natural and midden sites on both South and North Islands and possibly the Chathams. The reasons for its extinction are unknown.
