Proboscis Monkey at Apenheul, 30/05/12

Nasalis larvatus Apenheul's three males are the only individuals of this species outside South-east Asia and originated from Singapore. They've been there just over a year now and appear in very good health, so fingers crossed for some females down the line.

I really like this photo. Was this the first time you'd seen proboscis monkeys?
• Maguari
Thanks!

Yes, these were my first Proboscis - they were one of the main ojectives of the trip! All in all, I'm having rather a good year for Asian colobines. :D

Absolutely fascinating creatures, and it's nice that the three Apenheul 'trial' animals are all mature males so they really do look the part.

Not quite, there's a population in Japan's (East Asia) Zoorasia. :)

Once everyone's satisfied that the monkeys can thrive in Apenheul, the plan is for it and Singapore zoo to establish the global studbook for this species.

Now that's great news, let's hope these three live long and prosper then. :)
• Maguari
Oooh, caught on a technicality! :D

Yes, you're right - should have stuck to simply 'Asia'!

Is there any timeline for this ? We would love to see this species to make a return to North America and for zoos worldwide to achieve success in keeping and conserving this magnificant primate.

@team tapir, this would be a couple of years before calling it a success. There are already lots of American zoos that want to display proboscis monkeys, but Apenheul is the first zoo that was trusted to be succesfull enough with them by Singapore, because Apenheul is a specialist on leaf-eating monkeys.

But I would not expect any more proboscis monkeys outside Asia (except Apenheul) in the coming 10 years but that is only speculations

@Maguari, they are here now 10,5 months, they arrived on the 22/23 of july 2011.

I suppose that trip to Vietnam certainly helped... :D
• Maguari
Fair enough, had it in my head they'd arrived Easter last year but obviously not!

Just a little! :p
