Pronghorns - 1977/78

That yard had a trio of greater kudu,marabou storks, secretary bird, demoiselle and blue cranes,and a male springbok. The male kudu and the springbok would spar with each other. Later, a male red lechwe resided there along with rock hyrax. The impala were in the exhibit next door.

Thanks Michael, I have always tried to remember exactly where the impala were located. They packed quite a few species in this yard, I always enjoyed watching the secretary bird and would love to see that species here again someday.

The impala also had a saddle billed stork living with them.

The original pronghorn came from the Sybille Wildlife Unit in Sybille Wyoming, they were orphans and were being hand reared. When the original group started breeding all of the offspring were handraised. This allowed the zoo to send animals to other zoos with little or no injuries.

When I worked in Montana we had heaps of them. I enjoyed seeing them everyday, even if I had to keep fixing the electric fence they kept running through.
I wish we had them in Australia, but I think they would do best in a large enclosure of several hundred acres.
