Rajah the elephant can now be found on the first floor of the Auckland Museum.

A sign accompanying this exhibit reads:

Rajah looms large in the heart of Aucklanders and has been a much-loved part of Auckland Museum for 80 years. At 3m long, he’s one of the Museum’s most impressive specimens by size as well as popularity.

In 1936, Rajah, an Asian elephant, came to Auckland Museum from the Auckland Zoo, via Myanmar and Tasmania. He took seven months to prepare for display.

Rajah was on display until 1994 when he was removed for repairs. He was restored to his former glory in 1999. Rajah has recently been spruced up again, ready for the next 80 years.

It's so sad to think Rajah was shot at just 19 years of age. And all because zoos back then didn't know what musth was.
