red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa)

this species was widely introduced around NZ in the late 1980s by whatever Fish & Game were called then, with only short-term success. Although they are still sometimes reported in the wild here, most of those would seem to be releases by breeders for hunting purposes. They are still widespread in captivity though, but not usually seen in zoos. In fact, the ones here at Natureland in their walk-through aviary were the first ones I've seen in real life. June 2011
