Any idea on what subspecies Taronga has?

@Zoological Point All of the chimpanzees in the Australasian region are managed at a species level (like the North American population I believe) so the majority of chimps are mixed/unknown subspecies. There is one female that is a Western (P. t. verus) at Monarto Safari Park though.

@Zoological Point Like @WhistlingKite24 says, the vast majority of chimpanzees are hybrids; however, there are many that are the first or second generation descendents of wild born founders and therefore show the characteristics of those subspecies.

Safiri is the daughter of Shiba (1981), who was the daughter of a wild caught female named Susie (1948-1995). Due to her large size, people have speculated that Susie was a Central chimpanzee (making Shiba at least half Central chimpanzee). The dark shading around Safiri’s eyes (which Shiba’s previous offspring have lacked), suggests Western genetics from her sire could be coming into play. It’s believed Shikamoo is the sire, who is a hybrid male descended from a line suspected to have Western chimpanzee heritage.
