A plus point for South Lakes- a decent sized aviary for a Macaw to be able to fly properly in. I believe they used to be at liberty here, but perhaps no longer?

I hate to see wing-clipped macaws sitting on branches in small open enclosures in zoos- Colchester still do it, and so does Cotswold. Even Jersey used to.

I did like the size and space in this aviary, although the name 'Condor and Vulture Walk Through Aviary' might better be 'Egret, Macaw and Ibis Walk through Aviary' as there are far more of them than the 2 Condor and 1 vulture hehe.

We did see two more Macaws with rather more space to fly during our visit - while we were down by the Lion enclosure a pair flew overhead and over the fence, over the dual carriageway, round the field on the opposite side of the road, then flew back to the zoo.

So they do still have some at liberty then. Its rather gone out of fashion at most parks these days- too many losses of valuable birds perhaps?
