This picture is really cool. The only tenrec that I have ever seen in a zoo was but a tuft of fur balled up under a log.

      How big is this guy?

A bit intimidating for such a small creature.

I think this is the largest of the tenrecs - roughly the size of a rabbit. It can weigh over a kilo. The species is really remarkable for its litter size, often over 20! Females have 17 pairs of nipples (you can see I have done my research). All Paignton's specimens are males.

It's a huge gape - I wonder why they need one as vast as this?

Hmmm . . . would it scare you, if you were a fossa?

This thread made me realize that I know virtually nothing about tenrecs. I always thought of them as little hedgehogish type critters that lived in Madagascar. I had no idea that there are 34 species that have evolved to fill multiple niches from shrews to otters: [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenrecidae]Tenrecidae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

Is this GL's most bizarre shot of the year?
