I'm enjoying your pictures of this zoo carlos77. Is this zoo entirely for native Mexican species?

How are the volcano rabbits doing in the wild these days?
    • carlos77
Yes , Los Coyotes is only for animals from central mexico and in particular the Altiplano highlands where mexico city is located. The volcano rabbits have bred so well at Chapultepec and Los Coyotes that some have been returned to national parks on the Popocatepetl and Iztacihuatl volcano slopes. The wild population is stable at 3,500 teporingos in 2010 according to CONABIO, the official mexican wildlife organization. The volcano rabbits are endemic to the mentioned areas. Only the mexico city zoos have breeding populations of volcano rabbits currently.
