Nice looking species the yellow-headeds! I hope more zoos in Mexico try to preserve these in captivity (perhaps eventually to enable reintroductions.

Is there sexual dimorphism here or is it difference in immature and mature birds?

Last year the capture and sale of native mexican parrots, parakeets and macaws was finally banned by the mexican congress and federal government. various zoos have breeding programs for them. The yellow headed amazon parrot was highly sought because of their intelligence, beauty and great ablility to speak. Of course, i was delighted to find a well sized breeding group at zoo leon.

Profepa ( the mexican enviromental agency) has just stated that after the prohibition of the sale of native psittacines last year, ONLY 566 parrots and macaws were confiscated during 2010. This is actually is the lowest number of birds seized in more than a decade, which is actually good news. Most of the confiscated birds go to accredited zoos like zooleon which when possible release rehabilated birds into protected areas.
