As promised, here is a copy of the 2014 European Studbook Report for the Sungazer Lizard - Smaug giganteus

    Zoo Population:
1.2.0 - Vissenbjerg Zoo in Denmark
0.4.0 - Vienna Zoo in Austria
1.2.0 - Hamburg Zoo in Germany
1.2.0 - Frankfurt Zoo in Germany

    Private Population:
    1.1.0 - UK
4.3.1 (most likely female) - UK
    2.2.0 - Sweden
    2.2.0 - Netherlands
    1.2.0 - Netherlands

    Total Population:
    13.20.1

It is worth noting that registration of animals is completely voluntary. If you know of Sungazers being kept at any other location, I would love to hear about it.

Any questions please let me know.

    Best Regards,

According to Zootierliste there are other European zoos holding this species, including Stuttgart, Helsinki & Moscow. Have you tried contacting these collections?

Thanks Mike, I will contact Stuttgart and Moscow now.

Helsinki did have a female but my understanding is that she passed away.

    Best Regards,

All parties (both zoological and private) currently keeping this species are passionate about the long term survival of this species.

Yes I did contact them but I have not had a reply. If you, or anyone else, has a means of contacting them I would appreciate it.

    Best Regards,

Another place worth contacting is the Terárium Dubeč, also known as Terárium Praha. This is a private collection on the outskirts of Prague (not associated with Prague Zoo). They have certainly held sungazers in the past. The owner, Antonín Hnízdil, doesn't speak English but hopefully one of his colleagues will be able to help him translate any messages.

Thanks Mike, I have sent them an email.

I contacted Moscow Zoo last night and they confirmed today that the single male they had died at the beginning of 2013.
