I would like to congratulate everybody for getting out there and looking for wild animals, especially those who only started birding/mammaling/herping this year!! Well done to all, and good luck for 2015!

If it's any encouragement, I have to enjoy my triple-podium while I can as unless the year takes a very surprising turn I'll be a long way off in 2015! :D

same here. I'll be surprised if I make it out of NZ in 2015, so my birds won't even make it to 100. Mammals will likely remain as a single figure number. Look for me somewhere round the bottom of the list at the end of the year!

Ditto. I'm not planning on leaving Australia this year*, so I should get between 200-300 birds, but only about 20 mammals (if I'm lucky) and a similar number for reptiles.

    :p

    * If I do go overseas, it's likely to only be to a Pacific Island or group, with only 30 or so bird species to see, if that.

I see, I still have about 15 birds to add to the list, but it wouldn't make any difference anymore ;).

I too do not have any really big plans for next year and apart from a week in Morocco and 2 weeks in northern Greece. I hope to get to 40 mammal species and for birds 250 is likely to be realistic :p

You can add me in for 1 fish - I saw a giant Mudskipper in the Mangroves around Cairns.

If we're counting fish, I recall having seen at least Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) and Northern Red Snapper (Lutjanus campechanus).

I could probably pull up a few inverts too but I won't bother with that one.

We did three solid days of birding in the dying days of 2014:

    157 Sacred Kingfisher
    158 Little Friarbird
    159 Dollarbird
    160 Blue-faced Honeyeater
    161 Buff-rumped Thornbill
(All in the Seymour, Victoria area, and all lifers)

    162 Superb Lyrebird
    163 Olive Whistler
    164 Rose Robin
    165 Grey Currawong
(Toolangi, Victoria - Olive and Rose were lifers)

    166 Varied Sitella
    167 Yellow-rumped Thornbill
    168 Rainbow Bee-eater
    169 Rufous Whistler
    170 Spotted Harrier
    171 Jacky Winter
    172 Horsefield's Bronze Cuckoo
(You Yangs Western Plantations, Victoria. Rainbow and Yellow were lifers.)

    173 Black-tailed Native Hen
    174 Nankeen Night Heron
    175 Purple-crowned Lorikeet
    (Serendip Sanctuary, Victoria. All lifers.)

    176 Satin Flycatcher
    177 Brown-headed Honeyeater
(At Toolangi but I forgot to add earlier.)

Notes: my wife was 50m up a track and had prolonged views of a Bassian Thrush, but didn't think to call me over to see "an interesting bird".

For some reason, Nankeen Kestrel does not appear on this year's list, but I definitely saw them many times. I can't pinpoint a date or location though, so it is not on the list.

finally got it then. Well done! They are pretty cool birds, all hunkering down and glowering as they do.

    I'm hoping to crack 600. :p

Still going through my slides and identifying some that are problematic. Even my guide didn't recognise that last one.
