Another update, spurred on by a very enjoyable spot of casual birding today which somehow managed to result in possibly the most unusual wild lifetick I have *ever* picked up after I stumbled on a large number of twitchers enjoying a rare vagrant :) these additions are the result of several trips to the Northumberland coastline over the last few weeks.

    Current Bird Total: 209 Taxa

    195) Little Auk (Alle alle)
    196) Lapland Bunting (Calcarius lapponicus)
    197) Red-throated Diver (Gavia stellata)

    198) Little Egret (Egretta garzetta)
    199) Bean Goose (Anser fabalis)
    200) Shore Lark (Eremophila alpestris)
    201) Merlin (Falco columbarius)
    202) Little Owl (Athene noctua)
    203) Water Pipit (Anthus spinoletta)
    204) Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus)
    205) Baird's Sandpiper (Calidris bairdii)
    206) Green Sandpiper (Tringa ochropus)
    207) Daurian Shrike (Lanius isabellinus isabellinus)
    208) Barred Warbler (Sylvia nisoria)
    209) Yellow-browed Warbler (Phylloscopus inornatus)

    Current Mammal Total: 35 Taxa

    35) European Polecat (Mustela putorius)

My totals for Herptiles and Fish are unchanged.

Amazing day of birding today at Frampton - over 60 species seen, but just the one new one:

    343. Long-billed Dowitcher - Limnodromus scolopaceus

Lots of top-notch species though, including Glossy Ibis, Black-necked Grebe, Scaup, Spotted Redshank, Peregrine, and Grey Plover, hundreds each of Brent Geese, Wigeon and Teal, and several firsts-of-the-winter, such as Goldeneye, Whooper Swan and Fieldfare. Also a huge flock of greenfinches.

Thought I would post photographs of my unexpected - and very much appreciated - lifetick from Saturday given the fact I just uploaded some into the gallery:

This morning I went on a walk at Heybridge gravel pits (one of my regular haunts) in search of a lifer bird that had turned up, which I saw reasonably easily. Slightly more exciting was another scarce vagrant (not quite a lifer) that I found by myself.

    153. European serin Serinus serinus
    154. Tundra bean goose Anser fabalis rossicus

And with that, I have equalled my bird total for last year!

I made an error in misidentifying a Little Egret at position 87, so I'm replacing it with:

    87. Pacific Golden Plover

    and adding

    101. Oriental Pratincole

    :p

Bat box check in chilly South Derbyshire today - was keen to get to this check in particular as it typically produces a particular species otherwise scarce in the bat group's box schemes, but of which we found around 16 individuals today:

    55. Natterer's Bat - Myotis nattereri

    :)

    466. Brown-hooded kingfisher
    467. Black-and-white mannikin
    468. Green-headed oriole
    469. Square-tailed drongo

I have now seen more mammal species than ever before in one year and with a lot of luck even 100 mammal species might be possible this year...
