The babirusa are celebensis - Singapore simply retains the old pre-split name.

The giraffes are Cape (South African) giraffe, but there should also be a male Rothschild's at the zoo. Two females imported from Israel in 2005 (?) were labelled as Angolan at the time (in the WRS's own reports) but were actually Cape giraffes.

Yep, just figured that out myself as well! Thanks regardless.

So now the zoo keeps 2 female Cape giraffes, a male Rothschild's giraffe and a young hybrid, right? How about the Night safari?

from what I gather the Night Safari have the original Cape giraffes, which were imported direct from South Africa.

Very impresive list devilfish ! Esp. seeing 9 species of Brocket deers, a genus represented by 1 species in 1 collection in Europe ( Grey brocket deer ( Mazama gouazoubira ) at Faunia Madrid.
You list 2 species with question-marks ( M. bororo and M. murelia ), why when I am allowed to ask ?
As far as I can remember I've sofar only seen one species in real live but its a species which is ( still ) missing on your 2016-list, the Yucatan brocket deer.

Thanks! Merida brockets were my nearest miss (that I'm aware of) - Yucatans will have to wait some time for me. I still have to finalise identification for several taxa - some of these I'm not entirely convinced about (like the greater kudus), and for others I'm going mostly on localities and old species (e.g. Mazama gouazoubira wild-caught from Meta province [Colombia] is assumed to be Mazama murelia). Reasonable logic but I prefer to be better-informed and to have identified some identifying morphological features.

Yetserday Rotterdam Zoo was very good to make my 2016-list a little longer :
    69 ) Indian rhino ( Rhinoceros unicornis )
    70 ) Tuffted deer ( Elaphodus cephalophhus )
    71 ) Balabac chevrotain ( Tragulus nigricans )
    72 ) Black rhino ( Diceros bicornis )
    73 ) American bison ( Bison bison )
    74 ) Visayan warty pig ( Sus cebifrons )
    75 ) Dama gazelle ( Nanger dama )

Missed ( afaik ) one species, the Philippine spotted deer. Seen this species before but sofar not this time and not this year. Walked along the enclosure but I guess they were all inside.

In the previous update I forgot to list European roe deer (which I’ve now added) and I had listed axis deer twice. To minimise the effect on the running total, I slipped the roe deer listing in chronologically, near the deleted axis.

I also assume we’re now going by the latest taxonomy involving just four species of giraffe? I’ve listed them to reflect this.
Re: mouflon. Does Ovis (orientalis) musimon not have a place in G&G’s listings? What are the wild European mouflon thought to be?

I’m expecting numbers to potentially change a little with the identification of some unknowns, and the dismissal of others (e.g. bison, following earlier discussion).

Even if there were a divison between the two (which Groves and Grubb mention, but don't give evidence for), the captive population is of hybrid origin.

    Interesting thank you for that.
However, as I have chosen to count my taxa without all the odd splits I am still able to count Nubian ibex as Capra nubiana

Wow you have seen a lot of amazing species ! But the brown-colored muntjacs in Beijing Zoo are Reeve's muntjac :p BTW I am sure there are Marco Polo and Tibetan argali, but I am a little confusing about the Gobi argali :)

    74 White-lipped Peccary
    75 Guanaco

This will probably be my final total unless I go to West Midland Safari Park and New Forest Wildlife Park( both possible but not planned). Other than that it would mean trips to the furthest parts of the UK and I have no chance of going to Scotland or the South West in the next 2 months!
