Although of course I cannot be 100% certain, I feel that based off of how long I've been around Easterns the individual I saw was more distinct (smaller eyes, ears, I saw at in a forest like area)

Afaik there are no definite morphological differences between the two species, only genetic. I've asked a few people who do field work in my state and none of them could give me a definitive way to differentiate the two.

Just back from 2 weeks vacation - 1 week Germany and 1 week Turkey.
In Germany seen a lot of birds and many new species for the year-list but I still have to identify several of the photos made so these will follow later.
For the birds seen in Turkey I'm already finished and that was in fact not that difficult because there are hardly any birds in Turkey ( at least not at theplaces I've been ) !
To be honnest I had expected to see loads of birds and also a lot of new ones for the year list but only 5 can be added.
3 species were very common and were seen in good numbers every day ( House sparrow, barn swallow and huouse martin ) and another 2 species were also seen every day but in smaller numbers ( Hooded crow and laughing dove ).
The other 6 species seen I all saw only on one or 2 days ( Golden oriole, unidentified gull ( twice seen ), great tit, blackbird and little egret ).
Not a single waterfowl ( we've been at severla lakes, smaller rivers and at the coast ! ) and not a single bird of prey ( we we're also in the mountains ! ). Can't explain it !!!
Evenso of course enjoyed the trip and the rest of the nature - which is beautifull.
The five new species for 2017 :
    86) Hooded crow ( see Hooded crow | ZooChat )
    87) Golden oriole
    88) Common bulbul ( see Common bulbul | ZooChat )
    89) Little egret
    90) Laughing dove ( see Laughing dove | ZooChat )

So I hope from now on, they will keep you in the cage of New Zealand for the rest of the year, to give other people at least a small chance this year :p

aren't you still only on about day three of your posts? I think you may be going to beat me in mammals at least!

If I get to 600 for birds (and I will certainly be able to do that), then I'll be happy enough. It may not be many more than 600 though!

    Day 8 or so :p

With mammals I might indeed beat you, I must be around 70 mammals by now and I will go back to Ethiopia in August, though only work, but I should get some there. So in the end it will probably depend on how many mammals I can see on the islands of St. Malo in December.

I haven't heard of St. Malo. I googled it, assuming it would be in the Caribbean because it sounded Caribbeany. Not so much.

I shall, in that case, endeavour to keep my mammal total rising. Maybe I'll see a fur seal or a hare...
