Took a trip to Busch Gardens and believe it or not, got a new bird. Very surprising that it's the first of the year for me!

106 House Sparrow - Passer domesticus

One from a lunchtime walk on Friday:
    102. Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis)

Then off to the Wirral on Saturday to look for waders at New Brighton and view the high tide at Parkgate:
    103. Pink-footed Goose (Anser brachyrhynchus)
    104. Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata)
    105. Great White Egret (Ardea alba)
    106. Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus)
    107. Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus)
    108. Merlin (Falco columbarius)
    109. Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria)
    110. Ringed Plover (Charadrius hiaticula)
    111. Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa)
    112. Ruff (Calidris pugnax)
    113. Purple Sandpiper (Calidris maritima)
    114. Meadow Pipit (Anthus pratensis)

Today's birding plans were scuppered by miserable weather.

Back in Europe after spending the first 16 days of the new year in Tanzania, current totals are about 200+ bird species (though birding was not really a focus) and 40+ mammal species, I am planning to write a small trip report, so updates the lists will follow a bit later ;)

Just out of interest, it appears that from next year the 'official' BOU British list is to be formally aligned with the IOC list, with a net gain of a handful of species for the British list as new splits are recognised (though a couple are lumped back as well): BOU to adopt IOC World Bird List

That will be much simpler: I currently use BOU for my British lists but IOC for worldwide (and captive). This can lead to some strange discrepancies on things such as bean geese.

I failed to see a Pine Bunting (or at least definitely see it) earlier, which was annoying.:( I did still see one bird though (over a supermarket carpark!).

    43. Grey Heron Ardea cinerea
