Going by previous rules: The challenge applies only to species visible in the UK, so a pangolin seen at Leipzig would not count. However, as it is on the list, if a UK collection goes into pangolin before the end of 2018 this would count. I believe the answer to both of these would be "No" - the species are basically on the list "in reserve" for the event that these species do go on-display in the UK once again.
Done. Look at it this way, it will ensure that everyone flocks to whichever collection places a common tree-shrew onshow
Vervet -yes, we better otherwise there's not much to chase; Pigeon -happy to go with victoria and schlateri too Green Mamba -I'll take your opinion -Mamba taxonomy is beyond me. Common Boa- Boa constrictor senso lato (given the book said constrictor) -didn't realise there'd been a split (everyday's a school day); Giant Tortoise -yes, any/either. Good questions!
Currently something of a moot point as the only UK collection with Green Mamba - Wingham, which has Eastern - now holds them offshow but I reckon it would be best to go with *any* Green Mamba.
Originally published 1979 (my version 2006, not as far back as I thought) -to be fair the book includes them in "Very Rare Animals" section along with Caribbean Manatee, Golden Lion Tamarin and Hyacinth Macaw (which don't seem quite that rare in comparison or with some other species in the book).
I love this book - I got the original when I was a nipper, and had much pleasure, a few years later, ticking off animals with my son when he was young. An inspired choice for the 2018 Zoochat Challenge, @Shorts!
Sorry to appear difficult, but could I ask for clarification on a few please as I don't have the book: Western b&w Colobus - is that western Guereza or King Colobus? Common Iguana - is that Green iguana? Common Chameleon -? ZTL doesn't list anything as this as far as I can see( also is African rock python 'african python '? ZTL doesn't list African python Thanks
Blimey, this year's challenge is proving high maintenance (and it's not even started yet!) Colobus is Western Guereza (sorry for the confusion ) Yes, Common Iguana is Green Iguana Common Chameleon is Mediterranean Chameleon (Chamaeleo Chamaeleon) African Rock Python (Python sebae) is on Zootierliste as such. If I had my time again, and the nerve to dance round copyright, I'd just scan the book onto the site. Next............
