Maya the Malayan Tapir (calf) departed last week. She's joined a male at Stuttgart

Their website is wrong about Babu's age. Babu was born on June 20th 2011, meaning she is actually seven years old.

A couple of enclosures moves from my visit today.

The margay is now in the enclosure formerly occupied by the Great Argus Pheasant.

The former Painted Hunting Dog enclosure is empty again but according to signage is now being redeveloped for the Red River Hogs.

Mogli (male Malayan Tapir) has moved back up to the tapir enclosure where some trees have been planted, bark spread etc. I would highly recommend a visit.

There is a public vote to name the new tapir calf being conducted via the zoo's Facebook page. You can vote here - I voted for Penang which is what the keepers would like to have called the new arrival had it been their decision.

Visited today, couple of points of interest:

    • The Rainbow Lorikeets have laid 2 eggs, flock currently numbers 18 birds
    • New Giant Panda enclosure is coming along nicely, I would imagine they are aiming for an Easter opening
    • Keeper mentioned the rumour at the zoo is that the Sun Bear's will move into the current Giant Panda enclosure when the Panda's have moved to their new enclosure
    • There is also extensive work going on at the top of African Plains, it looks like they are going to replace the walkway with new, longer walkway
    • The new animal antics area is also progressing well, again I would imagine an Easter opening
    • Red River Hog's have not yet moved into the former Painted Hunting Dog enclosure
    • New Tapir calf has been named Megat following the public vote

Doesn't the painted dog exhibit seem a little too big for just red river hogs?

If you think that's big, go to Howletts, their's is about 5 times the size!

    Probably for them alone.
    Bongos would be nice again...
Even duiker/cranes but I’m not sure what kind of state the enclosure is in currently.

It would make a decent exhibit for some other carnivore e.g. Hyena or Maned Wolf.

    Far too small for Bongo.
