Hi all! I saw that we have species lists from places like the San Diego Zoo or Dallas World Aquarium, but one of the famous Weltvogelpark Walsrode was still missing. So, during my last visit, I took photos of all the signs and species I saw, and compiled this species list for you all to enjoy! I did not attend the bird shows, thus I may have missed species only used in those.
My last visit was two years ago, and not much has changed since then. As has been said elsewhere, most duck species have been moved into aviaries as the bird of preys in the area had specialized in catching them. Half of them were still unsigned, so I had to identify to the best of my ability. May someone have any additions from you’re visits, please let me know! Species rotation is quite frequent at this place, and some species were unsigned during my visit.
I will be following the ‘rundweg’, the official walking route, as the back bone of this species list. I will divide it is separate sections created by myself for easier navigation. These were the species on display on 19-07-2019.

An excellent resource :D thank you very much for taking the time to upload this!

When I have a chance, I should probably type up my own notes from June 2016 to serve as a comparison of how the collection has changed in the last three years.

Really nice list, good job! But i want to help a bit!

    Penguin corner
    Yard 3 (Right side):
    - Coscoroba swan (Coscoroba coscoroba)
My note: Are you sure this enclosure housed Coscoroba? Every time ive been at the park this year this enclosure housed a pair of Diepholz goose (Anser anser domesticus) ♂.
The Coscoroba swans has been located in the back of Uhu-Burg all year (and last year) i´m pretty sure. (They are located in the space between the two aviaries housing water and wading birds)

    Parrot aviaries
    Aviary 12:
    - Congo grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus)
    - Arabian partridge (Alectoris melanocephala) (Unsigned)
My note: When i visited some days ago this aviary housed Congos and Barbary partridges (Alectoris barbara) - ZooChat (unsigned), but the ones next to this one got the Arabian partridges.

    Meeresenten
After crossing a playground, you enter a corner with large aviaries for birds of prey. However, the first aviary you pass is for sea ducks. It contains:
    - King eider (Somateria spectabilis)
    - Spectacled eider (Somateria fischeri)
    - Long-tailled duck (Long-tailled duck)
    - Freckled duck (Stictonetta naevosa)
    - Red-breasted goose (Branta ruficollis)
    - Pied avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta)
    - Barrow’s goldeneye duck (Bucephala islandica) (Unsigned)
My note: The whole 2019 (as far as i know) this aviary housed one or two kinds of Aythyas as well. I´m not home at the moment so i can not tell you the exact species, but you might be able to find it online, or i will tell you again later! This aviary also houses (since may) Chestnut teals. The Long-tailed duck female hatched them and took care of them (i guess they put other eggs under her and put hers in a machine), they are now grown up and healthy when i visited some days ago.

    Pelican and flamingo yards
Following the path from the tropical owl aviaries, you will come across yards exhibiting pelicans and flamingos.
    Yard 1:
    - Peruvian pelican (Pelecanus thagus)
    - Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus)
    - Eurasian great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis)
    - Snow goose (Anser caerulescens) (Unsigned)
    - Swan goose (Anser cygnoid) (Unsigned)
My note: This pond has (as far as i know) also housed Great white pelicans all 2019.
    Great white pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus)

    Crane meadows
    Aviary 1:
    - African openbill (Anastomus lamelligerus)
    - Black-faced spoonbill (Platalea minor)
    - Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia)
    - Little egret (Egretta garzetta)
    - Southern bald ibis (Geronticus calvus)
    - Red-breasted goose (Branta ruficollis)
    - Plumed whistling-duck (Dendrocygna eytoni)
    - African grey-headed gull (Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus poiocephalus)
    - Black-tailed gull (Larus crassirostris)
My note: This aviary is odd and some of the species signed i doubt is even in there, like the Red-breasted geese and Plumed whistling-duck. I have been there several times last year and this year and they have never been present, even tho that the Red-breasted geese is really present in the other aviaries they are in. The aviary houses Spotted whistling duck (Dendrocygna guttata) though, as well as Red-crested pochards and Indian spot-billed ducks. (Now 27th of October i saw a female wood duck (Aix sponsa) as well).

I might chip in at another point with more notes ;)

I take back my note about the parrot aviaries and the partridges! I went back today and the Barbary partridges (Alectoris barbara) are in the same aviary as the Buru King-parrots and Sun parakeets and not with the Congos. Oopsie, i guess i remembered it wrong! The rest of my notes should be correct though!

Wow! I just came across this thread and ronnienl's post a couple of days ago! I'm extremely impressed - that must have taken three hours to type up! I counted 398 species with the additions from Daniel. That's an amazing bird collection! I noticed that in some of the other threads, there were a few members that complained about repeating species in multiple exhibits. I, on the other hand, enjoy seeing the same species in multiple exhibits because I think it's a positive statement of the zoo's dedication to breeding and maintaining that species in a viable captive population. I know that when I see a species listed in an exhibit, that doesn't mean that there is a breeding pair present - it could be a single bird, a pair, or a small colony. A noticed in the Walsrode list that 63 species were recorded in two exhibits, 21 species in three exhibits, 8 in four exhibits and 10 in 5 or more. The top was Madagascar Blue Pigeon recorded in 10 exhibits! That's a commitment to sustainable breeding. That was followed by Gilded Barbet in 8 exhibits, Blue Coua in 7 exhibits, and Yellow-breasted Fruit-Dove, White-naped Pheasant Pigeon, and Spangled Cotinga in 5 exhibits each. Cinnamon Ground-Dove, Crested Coua, Red-billed Curassow, and Chestnut-eared Aracari were recorded in 5 exhibits each. And this doesn't take into account the birds that are off-exhibit! Thank you again for posting such an excellent species list and starting this thread (four years ago!)

Very interesting to go back to this thread and check actually, especially since several of these species now are gone or almost gone. One great example of a species that seemed to be doing pretty good when this list was made is the gilded barbet - which now is down to 1 individual some year ago, and might even be gone now (according to sources in the park).

I'm sorry to hear about the Gilded Barbets! Barbets in general are a difficult group with which to work and it seems like none of the Asian or South American species persist in captivity for very long (poor reproduction I assume). I was hopeful that Walsrode would establish this South American species in captivity, but it sounds like another uphill battle. Thank you for the update! I can tell that you really are a bird lover and it's good to know that there are many of us on this forum!
