(unfortunately I can't post this under 'North America') Hi everyone, As a follow-up to my British/Irish zoological collection map (A map of British (and Irish) zoos), @Tim Brown has encouraged me and @snowleopard to develop a similar map for the USA and Canada, which is now available on the IZES website: USA ZOOS I would be grateful if you could highlight any missing collections which have days when the public can visit, even if only on tours. We're nearing 850 collections at the moment but I think we should be much closer to the magic thousand! Thanks!
This is excellent, and reveals lots of really dodgy old places that not even the indefatigable @snowleopard could possibly want to visit! One omission - I think - is The Wilds, in Ohio. Thank you for your work on this.
Great job @devilfish and @snowleopard ! This looks like it would have taken an exceptionally long time to make, and after a quick look through the map I've already found quite a few zoos close to me that I haven't visited yet.
Thank you both! Thanks @sooty mangabey, The Wilds was one I was certain I had added but it seems I didn't - thanks for spotting it! Glad to have highlighted mysterious collections @TZDugong - that's a big reason behind it.
Um.. Doesn't this already exist? Canada - Zoo Satellite Maps | ZooChat United States - Zoo Satellite Maps | ZooChat
No, not really. The @devilfish / @snowleopard map has a wider range of animal collections, and clicking on the icon for each takes you to some basic information about each place, including its web address. The ZC map allows you to leap directly to the associated gallery and forum for each collection. Are you being just a little bit negative here? I think the new map deserves slightly more than a couple of slightly negative, picky comments....
Sorry, I hadn't realised that the legend might not be visible to the public, so I've uploaded it here: Nayer Youakim If you still feel that the colours are inconsistent I'd appreciate further feedback to make it work better.
And to add to sooty's comment, the Zoochat maps show only the zoos which are in the Zoochat gallery. As new zoos are added to the Zoochat galleries they also get added to the Zoochat maps, but they will never cover the scope of devilfish's maps (this one or the UK one). So no, the devilfish map does not exist already.
Really great - tremendous work. @birdsandbats I had to click the full screen icon in the upper right corner to get a larger version to make it work. In the Tucson (Arizona) area, Sonoran Arthropod Studies Institute no longer exists. (They were never open to the public when they did exist). The gate on the entrance road (which has always been locked) has a sign for a new institution, but the name escapes me and it doesn't show on Google Maps. It is down the road from Desert Museum, so the next time I go out there I will try to stop on the way and see what the name on the gate is.
Anello's Torch Lite Petting Zoo, Ararat Ridge Zoo, and Safari Lake Geneva are missing. World Aquarium and Special Memories Zoo are now both closed and can be removed. Out of curiosity, what is the exact number of zoos on this map?
