    World sensation

Aalborg Zoo can now present a world first breeding: 23 young black caimans (Melanosuchus niger) just hatched at the zoo. They claim that this is a first for this species. The article is in Danish but you can see a short video here: TV: Her er verdenssensationen i Aalborg Zoo - TV 2 Nyhederne

In other news Aalborg Zoo has also been named the new EEP-coordinator for Asian lions (Panthera leo persica).

I couldn't belive the Black caiman had never bred before but my search in the literature and Internet didn't result in another collection which was succesfull so CONGRATULATIONS to Aalborg. Hopefully other collections will follow.

There is a new virtual tour feature on the zoo website

    Virtual Tour generated by Panotour

Move your mouse to the top left of the screen to see a clickable map and select a location. There are some great views of enclosures.

2.0 Asian Lion cubs born 30th December - not only a first breeding for Denmark but also the first offspring of the new founder male, Aakash from Singapore (imported June 2014) So these cubs are unrelated to the existing eep population on there father's side :)

That is fantastic news, this subspecies may not be as doomed in Europe as it appeared a couple of years ago! :D
I sincerely hope some more animals can be imported to increase the gene pool. :)

It looks fairly good in this respect at the moment. Rotterdam have Aakash's brother in quarantine and Prague are hopefully importing from Junagadh in the summer.
