While this is certainly true, I just like to remind you of these 2 aspects:
    a) One of the major supporters of the Sahelian wildlife restoration has been a French oil company Addax Petroleum.

    b) The reason the Niger Termit Toumna herds got impacted was Nigerien army security personnel hunting ..., Just to remind us all who killed of that 100+ addax in central Niger (no Islamists, no oil company staff and certainly not local Tuareg or Toubou peoples.

Never heard of this, where did you find this out ?

Of course this is very frustrating news to find out.

First hand information and personal knowledge of. I have participated in the recent past in various annual Saharan Conservation Fund events. It is as yet not clear how many addax survive in the central and border strips of Niger (and perhaps even Mali). Various methods have been used to track and monitor the addax: I put my hope into drone technology. Secondly, I would love to see some population exchanges in that the Nigerien addax are genetically somewhat off the current captive herds (that originated from the OROA - Chad area).

BTW: the 3 authors of the podcast are very respected science folks. So, I have no arguments with the feature per se. I just wanted to add a couleur locale.

That is really interesting to hear @Kifaru Bwana !

I think that this first hand information definitely does add to the discussion about the conservation of the addax.

I just find it incredibly depressing that this illegal hunting was being done by soldiers of a modern army of a Nation state.

It has been a while since the last incidents, but yes .. it was quite devastating that in a short span of time the addax herd was significantly impacted. I am not in the know on the latest status for the population, but it appears that which is left have become much more spread out...
